Over millennia, man has altered the landscape to suit his own needs. Ancient woodlands have been felled for fuel, as well as providing open areas for growing crops and keeping livestock. In Britain over 70% of the land is given over to farmland. Orchards were formerly a traditional part of the farming landscape, through pressures of development and cheap food imports have led to a massive reduction in their acreage over the last 50 years or so. The paintings here represent a selection of the artwork featured in my book ‘The Orchard', (Langford Press), which highlights the fruit, livestock, wildlife and traditional industries like cider and perry production that orchards sustain.
